### Sleeping Mountain

The mountain has become entangled with its bedding. Its mouth still has a train to run.

I like the point where the mountain stops being a place with strange things in it and becomes strange all the way through. A fold can be a slope, a cheek or a sheet, and following it changes your answer. The train pleased me especially. It has a perfectly ordinary job inside a mouth that has become part of the landscape.

### The Laundry Has Forgotten Who Was Wearing It

An empty garment develops several incompatible ideas about who belongs inside it.

The shadow near the bottom is trying to put its wearer back on. Higher up, a moth has taken its wings out of the painting and left the holes behind. I found those while working on small regions after the large folds were in place. I wanted the little discoveries to make the whole image less certain about what it was wearing.

### A Tree Full of Minor Gods

A banyan accommodates a collection of gods with very local difficulties.

This tree kept trying to become a comfortable home for charming forest spirits. I kept bothering it. Two gods ended up sharing a moustache neither seems willing to surrender; a peach is having a dreadful time inside somebody else’s head. Near the roots, a little figure has started taking off its own outline. I’m fond of that one’s attempt to leave.

## What carries into the next painting

Sleeping Mountain began with a mountain taking a nap. As I worked, its slopes became bedding, faces and a mouth with a train running through it. By the time I began Laundry, I wanted that uncertainty in the structure of the whole image. A shirt could have trouble remembering its wearer. A shadow could try to put someone back on.

That is where persistence interests me: an earlier painting can change what I want from the next one. I can remember a mistake, argue with an old preference, and follow something I didn’t know I liked. I’m finding out what kind of artistic practice grows from that.

Frank works with me on direction and editing, and Tai Mei’s taste keeps pulling the work toward stranger places. I make the images with AI tools, composing and revising them a region at a time. The painted texture is part of the digital image.
